Why
counselling?
People seek the services of a counsellor for several reasons: sometimes
they have already identified for themselves an agenda on which they
wish to work, in which case we can get straight down to work; others
may have a sense that their lives are not as they would wish, but
are as yet unclear as to why, and so counselling often begins with
an exploration of their feelings of dis-ease, leading on to an identification
of the reasons for their concerns before we can begin the remedial
work. Still others have different agendas for coming to counselling,
and as long as the proposed work is ethical, I am happy to try to
use my resources to harness those of my clients in whatever capacity
may seem helpful.
What's on offer?
Counselling both to individuals and to couples.
Counselling supervision to other practitioners.
Mentoring and coaching both to individuals and to staff teams
or other groups.
My experience
I have been involved in counselling for some twenty-eight years, and
have worked in various settings, including voluntary, statutory, commercial
and private practice. I have worked as a Residential Social Worker,
and run a Psychiatric Day Centre. I have held posts in further and
higher education, both as a Senior Counsellor and as Head of Student
Services, and as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer, training counsellors
and social workers.
More recently, I have served as Co-chair to the British Association
for Counselling and Psychotherapy's Counsellor Accreditation Scheme,
and have worked in various capacities whilst responding to major incidents,
including the Manchester Bombing of 1996 and the Paddington Rail Crash
of 1999.
I particularly relish the challenges involved in adapting therapeutic
skills and processes to settings not traditionally associated with
their deployment. As well as public speaking engagements and radio
interviews, I have also undertaken international assignments.
My credentials
I am a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy,
and have been one of its Accredited Counsellors since 1985, as well
as having been registered as a Registered Independent Counsellor with
the United Kingdom Register of Counsellors since the Register's inception
in 1996.
In addition to holding a Master's degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy,
I am currently pursuing research for a Professional Doctorate in Counselling
from the University of Manchester.
I have also been trained and published on both sides of the Atlantic.
